Last night I had the privilege of being invited to an opening at Melanie Flood Projects. The show was an exhibition of photographs by Austrian artist, Maximilian Haidacher (see my earlier post here)—not only was the work itself great, but the venue… oh the venue!
In an effort to propose an alternative to Chelsea’s beloved “white cube,” Melanie Flood decided to begin using her beautiful Brooklyn home as a contemporary art space.
“The gallery strives to bring artists and art lovers together in a space that is more personal and relaxed than a traditional gallery setting,” reads Melanie’s mission statement. “In this space visitors can enjoy art displayed in a unique manner that juxtaposes art with life, centering on the aesthetic dialogue of fine art with the haphazard existence of a personal home setting, bringing out contrast and difference, or meshing in unexpected ways.”
I found that last night’s show did just that. Melanie’s dog – Mr. G – wove excitedly between guests’ feet, a visitor’s young son chasing along happily with a pumpkin in hand. Guests gathered around the kitchen table, nibbling on halloween candy and sipping beer, pointing at various photographs and talking casually…

Above: Julia soaking in the vibe while I sneakily took her picture. Below: artists Jason Polan and Melanie herself, admiring one of Max’s photographs.

And finally, I give you Mr. G:

Even though I am broker than broke these days, at the end of the night I decided to buy a copy of Max’s beautiful new photo book, “Hôtels des Alpes.” No regrets! I took it home and flipped through it five, six, seven times before I passed out…

It was a good night. Thanks, Melanie! Thank you, Max!
