Treasures

Today, at the local flea market, I found this 1942 copy of Albert CamusL’Étranger (The Stranger), printed by my favorite publishing house of all time: Éditions Gallimard.

It smells really old and musty, and the pages are printed on beautiful heavy, grainy stock… I’ve always loved this book, so to find it bound beneath Gaston Gallimard’s signature minimalist cover – and in such great condition – really made my day!

Continuing with this existential theme, I also picked up this gorgeous old (1941) book printed by the French publishing house, Que Sais-Je? (literally meaning “What Do I Know?” —uh, irony)?

Que Sais-Je? printed books on all kinds of topics, always put together by a team of “experts,” but written in such a way that they were accessible to your average joe… kind of like the precursor to the “[...] For Dummies” series, I guess.

I love the old-school look and feel of their design; the simplicity of color and line, the yellowed pages, the vaguely nautical vibe. Glorious!
